Strength Is Walking Away

I’m white, and some of the hardest trouble I ever faced came from my own people. They wanted to break my confidence. They did not like the way I carried myself, the way I stood on my own, or the fact that I would not let their opinions define me.

But no one can break the will of a lion.

I had more trouble with white people than with any man of color. I never had a fight growing up with a man of color. That is not a judgment on anyone or any race. It is only the truth of my life, the roads I have walked, and what I have seen.

The color of a person’s skin does not tell you their character. It does not tell you whether they are brave, cruel, peaceful, loyal, fearful, or honest. Character is shown by what a person does when they are angry, challenged, embarrassed, or given the power to harm someone else.

I have been in fights, but I was never looking to prove anything. I was not afraid of being hurt; I was afraid a fight could become something permanent. I knew anger could make any man do damage he would regret. That is why I pulled my punches. I held back. I used my head. I played smart.

I never got hurt because I understood that losing control is not strength.

A man does not have to show everyone what he is capable of. Real strength is knowing your power, understanding the consequences, and choosing restraint. The strongest man in the room is not always the loudest, the wildest, or the first one to throw a punch. Often, he is the man who has the power to cause harm but refuses to abuse it.

Most men know deep inside whether they have power. A man with real power does not need an audience to prove it. He does not need to scream, posture, threaten, or turn every insult into a war. He knows pride can make a man foolish, while wisdom keeps him in control.

Walk away here when you can.

There is no shame in leaving a bad argument, a dangerous crowd, a place filled with hate, or a person looking for trouble. Walk away before pride makes a decision wisdom would never make. Walk away before anger takes the wheel. Walk away before one reckless moment changes the rest of your life.

If your family is with you, think of them first. Think of the people who love you. Think of the people who need you to come home safe. Humble yourself when you have to. Take a breath. Create distance. Being the bigger man sometimes means refusing to become the man someone else is trying to provoke.

Never draw a weapon to prove a point. Never use one to feed your ego. A weapon is not a toy, a threat, or a symbol of toughness. It is a permanent decision made in an instant, one that may never be taken back. Protect life. Choose peace. Leave when you can. Seek help when you need it.

“When ego falls to heart, it searches the crowd for excuses; a true man looks within for strength.”

The man ruled by ego looks outside himself for validation. He wants fear, applause, attention, and the last word. But the man with heart looks within. He knows who he is without needing strangers to confirm it. He knows self-control is greater than rage, restraint is greater than revenge, and peace is greater than any victory that leaves people broken.

No one can break the will of a lion but a lion does not have to destroy everything around him to prove he is strong.

The strongest thing a man can do is walk away with his family safe, his hands clean, his mind clear, and his conscience quiet.

I hope this helps many. Roy Dawson
